Ranking System

GSF’s ranking system is based on three factors: wins, losses, and disqualifications. Wins are most important, followed by disqualifications, then losses.

Adding to Your Record

Obviously, you can play as many matches with as many people as you want. However, only matches marked “Ranked” in the Compete forum will count
towards your ranking. Ranked matches can be doubles or singles, and both parties must agree to the ranked status of the match.

Challenging a Member

Ranked matches must have their own topic in the Compete forum and must be marked as such in the topic title. Also, both players must agree that the
match is ranked in writing in the topic.
No match that is set up via PM will ever be accepted as ranked. This is because it is far too easy to edit the
replies of the other person within a PM, so what is true and what isn't is impossible to determine in the case of a disagreement.  So don't even try.
With that said, you are allowed to use a PM to set up matches.  If you want to challenge a friend to a friendly battle, by all means, use a PM.  If you want
to call out a certain person for a ranked match, but you aren't sure that s/he will see your topic in the Compete forum, feel free to send that member one
PM (with an obvious subject, like "Ranked Challenge") containing a link to the challenge topic.  Note that spamming challenges is grounds for
moderation.  As the cliche goes, patience is a virtue.

Rules of Ranked Matches

GSF imposes one rule on all matches: no character-specific glitches.

Character-specific glitches are those that only one character can do. Most notable is Meta Knight’s Infinite Dimensional Cape, though others like Sheik’s
Chain Jacket are naturally included. Compiling a list of all of them is rather demanding (Brawl is a glitch-ridden game), so it is up to the players to know
what their characters can do.

Beyond that, all rules are left up to the players. This includes stock number/time limit, items, stages, number of matches in the set, and anything else you
care to add. All rules must be clearly decided before the match starts.

Reporting Results

There is a pinned topic in the Compete forum. At the conclusion of the match, one of the players should post the results in that topic. If results are not
posted within three days of the match’s conclusion, the match will not be counted towards either player’s ranking.

Disqualifications

Intentionally using a character-specific glitch is grounds for instant disqualification.
Violating the agreed-upon rules of the match three times is grounds for disqualification.
DQs count as two losses on your record.

Determining Ranking

Rankings are based primarily on the number of wins.  The more wins you have, the higher your ranking will be.  Thus, if  you want a high ranking, it is in
your best interest to play as many ranked matches as posible.  Losses come into play whenever two members are tied in wins.  The player with the smaller
number of losses receives the higher ranking.  Disqualifications count as two losses.

Tournaments

GSF holds tournaments fairly frequently (usually every two weeks). We pride ourselves on our unique and creative themes for our tournaments.  The
information for the next tournament is on the main GSF page; information for every tournament planned or past is on the Tournaments page.

Date and Time

Tournaments will always have a set date and a set time. This time will always be given in Central time. Anyone signing up for the tournament will be
disqualified if he or she is fifteen minutes late with no prior warning.

Signing Up

One week before the start of the tournament, either Memento Mori or Ezekiel will make a topic in the Tournaments forum. This topic will list the date,
time, rules, and prizes for the tournament. As soon as this topic is posted, registration is open. You must post in the topic in order to register. (Note that if
the tournament is registered with AllisBrawl, people may register through that as well.)

Requesting a Change in Time

If you would like to participate in the tournament but the set time is not favorable for you, you may request in the tournament topic that the time be
changed. If this is acceptable to everyone who has joined the tournament before you, the change will be approved and an admin will edit the first post to
reflect it.

You must request a time change at least two days before the set date.

Requesting a Change in Date

Changes in the date of the tournament will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Tournament Formats

Tournament formats will depend on the number of people entering, though every effort will be made to make it work in a single-elimination format.
The initial formation of the bracket and the assignation of any byes will be determined using the random number generator at http://www.random.org/ .

Tournament Rules

Most tournaments will have a special set of rules in addition to the ban on character-specific glitches. These rules are mandatory. All other rules for each
match are decided by the players.

Disqualifications

You are disqualified if you are fifteen minutes late to the tournament with no prior warning. This prior warning must be given reasonably in advance. Saying
you will be half an hour late five minutes before the tournament starts is not acceptable.

You are disqualified if you quit mid-match for any reason.

You are disqualified if you intentionally use a character-specific glitch.

You are disqualified if you violate any other rules of the match three times. Saying you did not know about this or that rule is not valid, as all rules must be
decided before the match begins.

Redoing a Match

Occasionally players forget to turn items on or not to play on a certain stage. If this happens and the players realize it before the set is finished and a winner
is decided, then any games in which the rules were not in place do not count. Without exception.

Prizes

Prizes will vary according to the tournament. Sometimes it will be just a title; other times it will be a Virtual Console or WiiWare game (sometimes of the
winner’s choice, sometimes of ours); still other times it will be a gift certificate or cash prize of up to $50.

Titles

Titles are sometimes awarded to the winner of a tournament or for other reasons. Titles do not convey any privileges and exist solely for bragging rights.
Most notable are the titles that go to the winner of a character tournament, effectively naming that player the best user of the character. If you think you
deserve that title, you can challenge the holder. Simply make a topic in the Compete forum. These challenges must use any special rules that were in place
for the tournament in which the title was won. The players decide all other rules.

A title holder must accept at least one challenge per week if any challenges exist, with priority given to the challenge made earliest in that week. For ease of
reference, weeks start at 12:00 AM Central on Sunday. Any challenges afterward may be accepted or declined at the title holder’s preference.

If a title holder relinquishes a title, he or she must make a topic stating such in the Compete forum. The first person to post claiming the title will receive it.
